Past Projects
1984-1985 –
Our first large roofing job of significance where we reroofed approximately 75,000 sq. ft. of roofs on Executive Office Terrace (EOT) buildings at 111-223 W. Anderson Lane; this torch down U.S. Intec modified bitumen single ply roof remained in service for 22 years
(not saying that it was trouble free as it got older, but this dead level roof installation remained in service until 2007).
1985-1986 –
Rebuilt and reroofed Emile Jamail’s building at 4911 Harmon Ave. after over 1/3 of roof deck collapsed during a heavy rainstorm (I advised Mr. Jamail of the hazardous and dangerous overloaded roof deck situation on this particular building over a year prior and he literally ran me out of his office; when it collapsed, he hired us to rebuild his wrecked building).
1989 –
Having a working relationship with property manager Tim Casey for nearly ten years Tim called me to go take a look at his father-in-law George Slaughter’s building at 205 Brazos St. in downtown Austin (formerly Slaughter’s Meat Market which closed in 1979) to see if I could resolve the roof leak issues on his 100-year-old building. The roof on George’s 16,500 sq. ft. building was beyond repair. I advised George that I was unable to effectively do any roof repairs and that he needed a new roof. George let me know that he only had $18,000 to go toward the roof, so I told George if he could wait a few months until August, I would install a new roof on his building by myself for $18,000 (that comes out to $1.09/sq.ft.). It was essentially the same roof system we installed on the EOT buildings four years prior, i.e., torch down modified bitumen, but at about ½ price. It took me three weeks and I moved 40 tons of loose gravel ballast one scoop at a time. Five years later upon having a big hiccup on another reroofing project Tim was very kind and understanding. When one does good, good things happen.
1994 –
When Mark Pratz and J’Net Ward needed a new roof on Liberty Lunch at 405 W. 2nd St. after a major reconstruction project to replace the structural roof bar joists recycled from The Armadillo, we were hired to install a new roof on about 9,000 sq. ft. of Liberty Lunch. Because of rain in the forecast, we were installing the roof while a show was going on in the evening.
2000-2004 –
University Towers student housing, a three tower hi-rise build in 1969 at 801 W. 24th St. where I installed Firestone Quick Seam EPDM rubber roof on a 6,000 sq. ft. walking deck which was more of a waterproofing job than a roofing job due to 2” concrete pavers in place over the EPDM membrane – not a single leak in this installation for ten years until the roof I installed was replaced due to a major building renovation of the walking deck. Walking deck roof was completed in 2001 and I subsequently reroofed other smaller roof decks at the one-story level and the elevator penthouse (which was fun because of being less than 400 sq. ft. with a very short parapet wall and a very busy roof deck loaded with cell site cable trays) on the facility with torch down modified bitumen through 2004, also performed maintenance on the ballasted EPDM rubber roofs on towers one and two to extend the life of those two roofs which lasted until the ultimate demolition of the buildings in 2020.
